The people of Germany got used to get things by war. First Prussia and later Germany transformed themselves from an agrarian system to a full fledged military/industrial system that used war to get results. At the end of the Great War they thought that they should not have lost. It wasn't clear that the British+American+French+Australia+NZ had a clear victory. The result, via Hitler was WW2. WW2 was not a war to send "a message" It was a war, at least in the Eastern front, for total death of the enemy. When the Germans were finished and treated accordingly by the Russians they suddenly became pacifists. The end of 300years of Jackboots. Here a neighbour government fully elected has effectively declared war on Israel. If the later stupidly insist on reducing enemy collateral damage and "send a message" Israel will lose exactly as America lost in Vietnam. Except that this time the boat people will speak hebrew. Wars do not end unless the enemy, one of the players, is obliterated.
