While I am certainly in favor of legislation which protects the "emotional and physical needs" of animals, I find it disturbing that attention to this should come BEFORE the imperative to protect the "emotional and physical needs" of women in Israel! Women (and girls) have been spat upon because someone didn't think they were dressed modestly enough. had chairs, dirty diapers, and cruel words hurled at them for praying out loud at the Western Wall, forced to walk on only one side of the street so that they would be separated from men, and -- perhaps most cruel of all -- often literally held hostage and figuratively "chained" by giving the power to grant divorce to the Ultra-orthodox meaning that if the husband doesn't agree, the wife is left in limbo! I think that the decision to pass the oversight of the care of animals from the hands of Agriculture Ministry (which had clear conflicts of interest and an agenda of its own) to the Environmental Protection Ministry is long overdue. So to is the decision to pass the oversight of the treatment of women from the hands of the Ultra-orthodox (i.e., the chief rabbinate which has its own agenda to protect and is composed SOLELY of Ultra-orthodox men) to a body of justice which has equal representation from liberal Jews AND women. We should only live so long...!!!
