No one has said that it will bring peace by itself, nor that it would circumvent the need for negotiations. Abbas has said from the beginning that negotiations would still be pursued, and that he was prepared to do so. The purpose for the Palestinian bid in the UN is to achieve recognition as a state in order to enhance their position in the negotiations with Israel...the lack of which has in the past left them at the whim of Israeli intrangience and forestalling while it continues to aggressively encroach into Palestinian territory, creating facts on the ground which it subsequently claims cannot be changed without adversely affecting thousands of people. It's the biggest, and most blatantly transparent scam ever conceived, and the Palestinians are seeking UN recognition - and membership - in order to make it more difficult for Israel to continue that scam! Which IS, by the way, why Israel is working so hard to prevent their success. Because, you see, if it IS true what Bibi claims about it not being able to change anything on the ground, and that only negotiations can lead to that - and it IS - then why is he fighting this so hard? The answer is that it will effectively end Israel's freedom to do as it pleases in the West Bank, and Israel will, for the first time, have to negotiate 'honestly' with the Palestinians in order to achieve final status...something it's been dodging and circumventing for decades!
