Levy implies that game theory does not apply to the Israeli Palestinian conflict. On the contrary, Nobel Prize winner Aumann has stated that game theory does apply to this conflict, and even stated his opinion with regard to Gaza. Haaretz, of course, chose not to publicize his view, as it runs contrary to Haaretz editorial policy. Aumann pointed out that according game theory, the Gaza withdrawal was ill advised because it sent the message that if the Palestinians increase their terrorism, they will be rewarded with more territory. Not surprisingly, Hamas, which took credit for the Gaza terrorism and subsequent withdrawal, won handily in the elections. Only now do some Haaretz writers (such as Amir Oren, last week) admit that the withdrawal was a mistake. Amazingly, Haaretz continues to support Olmert's plan, despite the fact that according to game theory, it suffers from the same shortcomings as the Gaza withdrawal.
