Israel at the present time is stuck in a ditch, from a diplomatic point of view. Abbas is ready to negotiate peace if Israel stops building in Jerusalem. The US accepts this argument, i.e., views the Jerusalem status as negotiable, and is pressuring Israel to concede something there. The Quartet holds a similar view, if not more anti Israeli. In the meantime Netanyahu is weak and too fearful to concede anything on Jerusalem, less be becomes a "heretic" in the view of his Likud extremists, so the World now blames Israel for the stalemate and its standing worldwide is declining. What could get Netanyahu out of the ditch? An operation in Gaza like Cast Lead. Abbas stopped his negotiations with Olmert during Cast Lead as a sign of being "appalled" by its ferocity. So now we know how the Pavlovian reflex works: An IDF operation in Gaza stops peace negotiations, i.e., the Palestinians can be blamed for the stalemate. I suppose Hamas and the little orgs want to demonstrate to all that Israel simply refuses to negotiate peace. It may convince their flock that "resistance" is the way to go. Why help Netanyahu?
