...To this day it is not entirely clear what was at the heart of the Doctors’ Plot... Is that all Tom Segev could write about the ‘Doctor’s Plot’ and the reason for it? Today we know that the ‘Doctor’s Plot’ served Stalin as a prelude to mass deportations of Jewish population. The un-insulated barracks were being prepared in southern Siberia. The rumors in winter of 1953 were rife that deportations are coming soon. Many families, including my own, bought huge rucksacks in preparations for deportations. Stalin died in March 1953 on the second day of Yom Kippur. The threat was gone. However, for many years after those dark times of fear I was occasionally spotting same rucksacks in the wardrobes of my relatives or friends.
