I don't understand why my religion - any more than my skin-colour, sexual orientation, haircut or taste in poetry - should have anything to do with my state identity. It's not a matter of security and it's clearly not helping the government to design programs more suited to my demographic. There is no question, this IS news. This is important and it's closely related to Netanyahu's insistence that Abbas recognize Israel as a Jewish state. I would like to recognize it as a *democratic* state and as long as my religion (or eye colour or dancing ability) remain on my ID card, I can't do that.
