A factor missing from this analysis is the role played by US public opinion, itself a facet of global public opinion. Obama is aware of this force and nurtures it; a cynic might say panders to it. Those who seek to rise to top political positions in modern democracies must respect public opinion. It is true that Israel has a special relationship with the US but it is a relationship of mind, not heart. The days when cries of anti-Semitism would silence Western opposition to Israeli territorial ambition are all but over; they are increasingly relegated in people?s minds to mingle with biblical arguments. The worst thing for Israel of late was the presence of that highly professional Aljazeera TV team in Gaza last December. Those bits of film will never die. Israel offers, alas, a cold face to the world, a face and manner totally lacking the warmth and charm possessed by so many individual Jewish people. Obama is striving to make the world more interconnected, Israel isn't helping.
