The edict against poly was imposed by Ashkenazi rabbis and was binding upon Ashkenazi Jews only. It was to apply for one thousand years, and that expire around 10 years ago. Even so, it was only decreed by Ashkenazim so that European Jews wouldn't stand out in Christian Europe, and so they would not antagonise what was "morally" expect in Christian Europe. Jews outside of Christendom have always been poly up until recently, again, at the hegemony of Ashkenazim. Some Yemenite Jews are still poly, even in Israel, if they arrived with more than one wife. But once in Israel they are no longer allowed to marry more, and those born here are allowed only one, because of the imposed European "morality".
