These are the times when unpopular leaders, such as Bush and Olmert, can provide terrible leadership and make bad decisions in a war that is spiraling out of control, and still survive! I am not sure what to make of that. In Israels form of government it is much easier to get rid of a poor leader if the people have lost confidence in him, yet Olmert remains. In fact, he seems to have gotten his second wind. With lame duck Bush leaving office in 18 months, and Gordon Brown of UK signalling that he will not automatically follow America into various wars and skirmishes, the mideast may be left to their own devices. I wonder if Olmert will still be hanging on when that happens.
