Nobody denies that there were Arabs living in Israel prior to 1948. There was no attempt, and has never been one, to make believe there were no Arabs. There was a war, and the arabs left (for whatever reason, depending on your side of the story, either to avoid the conflict and let the Arab armies to the dirty work, or fear of Jewish uprisals. See Abbas earlier version of why they left voluntarily). Either way, they left. They would have destroyed the Old Yishuv had they won, and did in fact destroy Jewish presence in the old city of Jerusalem. The left has built up this straw man of an ethnic cleansing narrative, and would love to present this as evidence. But it isn't, because there was a war, in which these villages were abandoned. As is clear, during the Uprising, they were home to armed gangs. Regardless of which side you take, the point is they were not passive victims of collateral damage, but were active participants in a war, who were not genocided, but left.
