To advocate for democracy in the Wild Middle East is indeed letting the devil loose. I confess to a double standard on this issue. Moreover, it is part and parcel of the "collossal errors in judgement" that an insular super-power with a naive intelligence community is committing, according to the latest intelligence report. Why on earth isn't Israel more forthcoming with a successful Foreign Ministry about the terrible dangers of Hamas, Hizballah and Islamic Jihadists taking advantage of democracy just as Nazis did in the early 1930's? Hizballah is after all being cornered to some extent, being declared by some European countries as a terrorist organization. Hamas is also under scrutiny and Jihadists also. I would appreciate Akiva Eldar making an analysis on why the sudden change in the Bushies approach vis a vis Iran, Hizballah, Hamas, & co. What lies behind the Beirut meeting? What behind Condoleezza Rice's words on Hamas partaking in the PLO? Is it Realpolitik? Is it sheer stupidity? Is it some astoundingly shrewd maneuver from an astoundingly stupid U.S. administration?
