Years ago in the media America was shown as a glorious place. This Dick Van Dyke Show image along with American war films gave the impression that America was darn perfect. Then came the late 60's and Midnite Cowboy and anyone who had never seen the dirt and grit of New York or never thought that there were any poor in America were shattered. Pleasantville exposed. Well for most Jews around the world,Israel has always been Pleasantville. The greatest army, sand turned to grass,Tel Aviv fashions and the picture that I have in my mind from Rosh Hashana of soldiers standing looking at the Wailing Wall with tears in their eyes after the 67 war. There have been many tears. Many tears all the way around. The Pleasantville picture of Israel is crashing. Its good. In essence a seed contains everything that the tree could be,a seed is perfect. It has potential. The tree will never be what the seed hoped for. But when the seed moves to the real realm, planting it watering it,nurturing it,the tree becomes a beautiful reality. Now Israel is becoming reality. And the spots are seriously showing. Its time for us all to understand the hardships the Palestinians go through every day. Israel is not Pleasantville anymore and of course there are reasons for the way the guards do things, they fight fire with fire, they are frustrated, angry. They are afraid. Although we cannot change the mind of a fundamentalist, the moderate of us on both sides have to start working for not a Pleasantville (the fundamentalist will always have thoughts of his Pleasantville) but a real best-it-can-be peace, one of respect for other people We have to get there.
