The Pope did do all humanly possible at that time. People, in hindsight, give him too much credit of influence in politics. He had NO power over Hitler and the previous pope had NO power over Mussilini (sp?). Popes have not had that kind of influence since the middle ages. Pope Pius encouraged his priests (St. Kolbe died at Auschwitz for someone else), monks, and nuns (Edith Stein = St. Benedicta of the Cross was doubly cursed for helping harbor Jews as a Catholic and having been born into a Jewish family). MANY, MANY Catholics who stood up, with the pope's approval, and saved Jews with false Baptismal certificates, hid them, and in Rome gave up a lot of money and sacred vessels made of precious metals to ransom Jewish families. Many Jews were hidden on Vatican grounds. You all need to do a little research. Actual historical documents written BEFORE 1960 would be helpful.
