Perhaps these deferred young men in the yeshivot could form a peace corp to take Jewish texts and apply them to the work of peacemaking in the occupied territories. Perhaps they could form a corp of observers at the checkpoints, a kind of haredi Machsom Watch. Perhaps they could invite military or political leaders from around the world to attend sessions on the Jewish ethics of warfare. Perhaps the roshei yeshivot could define to the Israeli people how they see themselves as being a light unto the nations and put that into practice. Then these deferments might mean something and help create a new reality in Israel and how it is percieved both in the region and in the international community.
