Neither the Palestinian Authority and the Egyptians had much choice on this. Given that there is no Israeli peace partner the Palestinians had to focus on internal renewal and a relationship with the international community independent of the peace process. To fulfill this required internal co-operation and the holding of new elections – civic, parliamentary and for the presidency. This coincides with regional change and so the need for the new Egypt to break with the Mubarak-Suleiman polity on isolating Hamas to the meme of the Israel/USA war against terrorism. It’s not only bin Laden that has died but the old order in the ME. Israel over-reacted to the missiles coming out of Gaza (and exploited the election of Hamas too well) and so bottled the planned disengagment from the West Bank and so wasted its last best chance to make a peace and it’s long past the time that Palestinians kept paying the price for this.
