Altho some of the things Yehoshua says are wrong, this article is important and some of it is right on. Even the parts I disagree with add something to the discussion about where we, as Jews, are headed. "What I sought to explain... is that, for me, Jewish values are not located in a fancy spice box that is only opened to release its pleasing fragrance on Shabbat and holidays, but in the daily reality of dozens of problems through which Jewish values are shaped and defined..." But many Jews in the diaspora also approach every situation in their life as Jews. Does Yehoshua think that IL Peretz approached some situations as a Jew and others as a gentile? Many Jews who are neither Israeli nor religious live in Jewish community and make every decision in their life in the context of Jewish values and Jewish history. Yehoshua dismisses every Jew from the diaspora - religous or secular, current or from history - as having an 'incomplete' Jewish identity.
