A friend visiting from France has just e.mailed to say that she was wandering around the Old City and came to Jaffa Gate at the time that the protest started. She saw first hand that it was entirely peaceful. Then the army arrived and began treating people in a very aggressive and threatening way. This led to confrontations. Sadly, this is typical. Furthermore, it suits the Israeli authorities that things end in this way. Non-violent action to protest the violation of Palestinians' rights is the most threatening to the authorities since it prevents them dismissing the Palestinians as a bunch of 'terrorists'.
