Just a reminder of a few forgotten facts: Syria claims that as part of a peace agreement it was once offered the Golan Hights, by the late PM Rabin. When Netaniahu was elected PM, Syrain officials demanded to continue the talks from the same point. My question is: if Rabin offered them the Golan, why didn't they take Rabin's offer then? Possible answer: Syria does not want/ need the Golan Hights. The Israeli price (from their perspective) is too high: a permanent peace, thousands of Israeli tourists in Damascus and the opening of Syria to the west... What is the importance of the Golan to Syria? apparently not very high. Another point is that the US makes efforts to isolate Syria and will not like to see advanced negotiations between Syria and Israel now. Syria also suffers from internal unrest, with a growing (inside) opposition to Assad. Why should Israel "give a hand" to this regime, which might collapse soon?
