There is no doubt that the pursuit of peace between Israelis and Palestinians has been a frustrating mercurial exercise that has exhausted the efforts of countless politicians and pundits. The question is in the increasingly dangerous fishbowl that is the Middle East in 9/11 whether by going to the UN unilaterally President Abbas will have more up side than down side results. It seems to me with Mubarak gone and the whole Middle East in motion the Palestinian leader has looked over his shoulder an is most interested in preventing a local uprising that threatens his reign and the continuing rule of Fatah. That may represent a bigger issue than all the other negative results postulated by Israel, the US and others.
