Paul.....the Oslo agreement was negotiated after it was clear that Hamas was becoming a much bigger threat than Fatah/PLO. Their ideology was attracting increasing support from the Palestinian populace...especially the youth. The Intifadah notwithstanding, the influence of the secular Palestinian groups was starting to wane. The Israel-PLO agreement was too little too late. From the Palestinian point of view (yes, they do have their own point of view), nothing was happening. Now Israel finds herself in the same situation...more or less. She must find some accomodation with moderate elements in both the PLO AND Hamas or watch the inexorable rise of an even more intransigent foe and risk having the entire region go up up in flames...even more thanit already is.
