The alternative voices that care for Israel and have the discernment to recognize and speak up about what is lacking and what is needed, are those following in the footsteps of the prophets of old. They often spoke out against the leaders of the day and of course what they said was not at all appreciated. Elijah and especially Jeremiah come to mind. Jeremiah was considered to be a traitor and nearly lost his life as a result. When he was not heeded the nation paid such a heavy price and we have the whole book of Lamentations as a reminder. Israel had to learn the hard way, but even after that they still strayed from the path chosen for them. Those who don't learn the lessons of history are bound to repeat them.
