Ultimately, of course, the good justice fell afoul of Israel's national equivocation. Israel likes to pretend it is an enlightened, egalitarian, Western state -- with all the moral strictures this implies. At the same time, it wants to pursue various racial and territorial goals that are quite incompatible with this. There really wouldn't be much of a problem if Israel plumped for one set of goals or the other. The problem comes when she tries to have both at once. It's like watching a fat lady try to stick to her diet AND eat that delicious piece of cake. It just can't be done.
