They got scared of the trouble they'd be in, called the police and said they'd been kidnapped by arabs, and burned the evidence. They hid and were found by a search team. From there, Mossad took over, provided them with fake passports, and put them on a plane to NY. Why would a nice Jewish boy steal a car in the first place? The answer is in whom that car belonged to.
