Being one of those despicable guys from the Gallut who has never served I thik that Gideon Levy forgets the special and delicate situation Israel is in. Perhaps he would suggest that Hamas, Hizbollah, Syria and Iran should make an agreement with the IDF to give his freind's children a rest. I doubt the response would be positive, and while this reaponse doesn't come Israelis should not lower their guard. It is sad to see the dangerous, slow and gradual decadence of Israeli moral, where young Israeli's see themselves as citizens of a quasi-european country and serving the army is an unwanted burden. It is easier said than done being a "Gallutnik" but serving the Israeli army should be seen as a unique opportunity for taking the Jewish nation's destiny in one's own hand, a priviledge that very few Jews have had in our history. Without this kind of spirit I think Israel is doomed in the long run.
