Riots by settlers are the worst thing they could possibly do to guarantee a Jewish future in Hebron, and will only alienate much of Israel. However, the Jewish presence in Hebron is as much a religious right as a historical right (only after being expelled by the Arabs were Jews absent from Hebron). To ignore this makes Mr Bar'el's column lack credibility. Of course the settlers must be subject to the rule of law, but their right to live there free from the threat of an arab pogrom must also be protected. To deny this right would be to make us self-inflicted victims of apartheid.
