Make Israel an orthodox Jewish state? Yikes. I'm orthodox but I don't want to see Israel as an orthodox state. People are fragile, weak and human. We are susceptible to ego, fraud and worse. As a woman I have a whole lot to lose (including my freedom and dignity) should all-too-human men try and run Israel as an "orthodox" state. Look at the way the orthodox communitties are run in Meah Shearim, Ramat Bet Shemesh Bet and other places: frightening, ignorant and violent. Israel should remain democratic. I'm orthodox and will remain orthodox- out of choice. This is not Iran or Saudi Arabia. Power has the potential to corrupt in everyone. Put power in the hands of people who are ignorant and uneducated to begin with and you have a recipe for a medieval way of life. No thanks. Torah is central adn important. Learn it and live it. But give people a choice. G-d does.
