"To weaken the front against him, Bush aspires to release Syrian President Bashar Assad from Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's embrace. A signal from Assad about a less anti-American policy will find an ear in Washington, in the spirit of the recommendations of the Baker-Hamilton report last fall." - Amir Oren Oren doesn't realize what kind of an ideological blockhead Bush is. Syria keeps sending signals, and explicit messages, to the US that it wants a dialogue with them, but to no avail. For example, Syria insists that peace negotiations with Israel should involve the US at least as a moderator. The Syrians would love to talk to the US and remove the threat it poses to Syria. But Bush is an ideologue. Syria supports terrorists (in order to pressure Israel to return the Golan), so no talks. The result is that Syria is pushed into Iranian hands. Bush is now forced to talk to Iran about Iraq because they can control the Shiites, but prefers not to talk to the LESSER evil Syria!
