Hamastan as Hamas' phyrric victory in taking over the Gaza strip, was the much needed excuse for firing Hamas from the PA. It came at the price of exscising Gaza from the West Bank. But so be it. Now there is a government in the West Bank with which there is at least something to talk about. Tax revenues will be lifted, some prisoners will be freed, some further degree of freedom of movement will be granted. And so, the dialogue can resume and there can be an horizon which with Hamas in bed with Fatah was impossible. On the contrary, Akiva, this might be a blessing, not a curse or Sharon's vindication of a Palestinian bantustan. Salam Fayyad has lots on his plate. But the US, the EU, Israel and most Arab states are with him. So things look mmore hopeful than ten days ago. What will happen with Gaza. If it explodes, the IDF will take care of it. If it implodes, Fayyad will take care of it. If Hamas simply consolidates quietly, Israel's politicians will know what to do.
