"PA Chairman Mahmoud Abbas met over the weekend with the U.S. Middle East envoy David Welch to ask that the U.S. put pressure on Israel to freeze its expropriation of land near Jerusalem in the E-1 area. Haaretz has learned that the Palestinian Liberation Organization's chief negotiator Saeb Erekat also sent a letter to the Quartet of Mideast mediators, asking them to stop the expropriation as well as construction in the settlements." It is a crying indictment of the Israeli Uncle Tom, Mahmoud Abbas, that when he has real power he fails to use it. Without his presence at the Annapolis conference it would be a total farce and a great embarrassment to the Bush administration. If Abbas were to threaten not to attend unless the Israelis formally abandoned their E-1 Langrab he would have a real chance of stopping this in its tracks. He has an ace in his hand but he won't play it. Abbas is a pathetic man of jelly, a total waste of space, useless to the Palestinian people.
