Shlomo Avineri is a leftist Zionist. He is one of the few leftists left in Israel who genuinely adores his country. His point about Hatikvah is well taken. The Arabs may not identify with it and no one expects them to but in a democracy, the minority must show respect to the values of the majority. Israel's anthem expresses what Israel is all about. And this must never be censored out of a sense of false regard for Israel's Arabs. Their feelings won't be hurt by the recognition Israel is a Jewish State. Haifa's law faculty betrayed their duty to uphold identification with the country's patriotic spirit, which is what gives it a freedom lacking in the rest of the Middle East. That needs to be cherished in Israel by all those who love the Jewish State! The Jewish soul lives!
