Shortly before the pull out from Gaza, in a Q&A session (see #74) Yossi Beilin remarked: "We should negotiate with him (Palestinian PM Abu Ala), and the pragmatic Palestinian leadership he represents." Seeking a buyer for the Gaza Strip, the Sharon-Olmert team told us that Abu Ala and Mahmoud Abbas were irrelevant, for not being pragmatic enough. So they chose to relinquish the property, its gates wide open for the wildest to seize it. This is how, instead of the "too weak and unworthy partner" PM Abu Ala, Israel got PM Ismail Haniyeh and Hamas. And what did the Israelis get? They got so impressed by such a brilliant achievement they promptly elected Ehud Olmert to Prime Minister. (They never change.) And what did PM Ehud Olmert get? A most superb excuse for not having to negociate with anyone, on anything.
