For Meshal to state openly that Israel exists, no matter how subtly or hesitantly, is a major landmark. It is not merely a crack in Hamas's armor, but a shaking of the foundations of the organization's raison d'etre. For Olmert to shrug off this statement is an act of blatant arrogance. If Israel were to issue a statement of equal significance, we would be celebrating Gilad Shalit's release and return home. But, no, Olmert continues on his stubborn way, constantly moving the goalposts, and making cynical statements such as "Does that mean we didn't exist before?" Recognition is want we have been demanding from Hamas all along. Now that it has begun to emerge, are we going to reject it? If Olmert continues on this path, we are not only consigned to continued hostilities, no move towards negotiations, no return to the Road Map, no move towards a Palestinian state. We will also be consigned to live with the horror of knowing that we are stuck because of mere semantics.
