After 3 years of helping the African asylum seekers & refugee community in Israel, I can tell you personally that there is so much xenophobia and racism here that those 150 individuals prefered to go back to a genocidal context rather than stay. it is truly sad, especially since we Jews have actually played a major role in shaping and writine the Geneva Convention protecting refugees, which we once were also. I think Israel is fooling itself pretending it want to "keep its character", thinking that the African "infiltrators" (or "work migrants", like people like to call them here!) will threaten this very character.... BUT let us not forget that Israelis among themselves don't get along too well and that its very society is totally fragmented, with categorized groups everywhere (the Ashkenazim, the Spharadim, the Ethiopian jews -not always accepted!-, the Russian wave of jews, the Arab citizens, the Yemenites, the Haredim, the Mizrahim, the Bedouins, etc.). If Israel showed a slight bit of compassion towards those people who have lived things most of us will never experience (genocide, rape, torture, slaughterhouses, etc.), perhaps the African will be able to be happier here. But for now, the country founded by refugees is denying the responsability it has towards other refugees. It should not even be a question, this is something legal that Israel has already signed and agreed on!!
