In Northern Ireland at one time Jews were an economic necessity. No Protestant would buy anything from a store owned by a Catholic, and no Catholic would buy anything from a store owned by a Protestant. This meant if a town were too small to have two stores, they needed a Jew to run a store since both sides could buy from him. Unlikely but true.
