Once again the St. Louis is dragged out as a proof of iniquity with no thought of context. The US was in the tenth year of a depression with no end in sight. The unemployment rate was nineteen percent. There was no evidence which would lead one to believe that such a catastrophe as the death camps was coming. If we opened immigration for Jews, we would have had to open it for any others who applied. Granting all these factors (which are conveniently omitted), what country would have allowed them to land? Why should we?
