1. Whatever Hawkins says or does is a personal judgment and has nothing at all to do with academic freedom. It does nothing to limit anything an academic can say or do. 2. I seriously doubt that anyone who objects to his action would have reacted similarly to a conference in apartheid South Africa. It's just a matter of whose ox is gored.
