What we are seeing now is the culmination of three years of US self searching and secret diplomacy. The first signs of change in US attitude came in March when the White House forced Israel to give up four proposed bills which would have annexed the West Bank in all but name, but I did not expect the first ground-breaking unfolding of the new policy to occur in Gaza. The most significant result of the Gaza truce is that Gaza will acquire real independence. So that made me wonder how the PLO, with its mandate as the only representative of the Palestinians, will fit into Gaza’s putative role as the first independent Palestinian state. It is therefore reassuring that Morsi is going to employ his not inconsiderable prestige to reconcile Fatah and Hamas, and Cliton’s has just shown her concern for the good health of the PA while at the same time sending a broad hint that Palestinian statehood is not such an awful thing, after all. I don’t know why all of a sudden I am beginning to like this lady.
