"Obama's advisers see this [his lack of popularity] as the reason why Israelis view his diplomatic initiatives on both Iran and the Palestinians so negatively." Wrong! His popularity is low because of the positions he takes regarding Iran, the Palestinians and Israel itself. Obama's first call as President to Abbas, his first foreign interview with an Arab network, his submissiveness to the King of Saudi Arabia, his *two* major addresses to the Islamic world - all that sends a message. Obama lost *major* credibility when in Cairo he suggested some moral equivalence between the Holocaust and the "suffering" experienced by the Palestinians, and suggested Israel's legitimacy stemmed from their Holocaust experience. His constant berating over "settlements", meddling over property ownership and opposition to building even in the *Jewish* Quarter of Jerusalem raised hackles across the board. It also stiffened the Palestinians' refusal to negotiate. And then there's US weakness on Iran..
