The US will not be able to stop this in the UN and any punitive measures imposed on the Palestinians will not fail to have serious repercussions for Israel and America. Europe is clearly not buying into the American-Israeli argument, and right now the US and Europe are hoping to get the BRICs to take a hand in bailing them out of their current economic woes. The US will have to get off its high horse. The only thing Obama can reasonably do, if he can bring himself to make a decision once in his life, is to submit a reasonable counter proposal. But this counter proposal must state clearly that settlement construction will stop completely and never resume. It must set clear timelines, and it must not contain the offensive language used by Blair, Ashton, and Ross about “demographic facts on the ground.” Otherwise, you may as well use your veto, Mr. Obama.
