Obama is an ineffectual president, as is known to all, including American Democrats. He is a good man, with good intentions, but has a problem carrying out his vision, which he is able to express eloquently. One of his problems is that he is not inclined to fight opponents, but rather to convince them. Unfortunately, most people do not decide their actions by logic alone but by their ideology and beliefs. In regard to Israel, fighting is even harder because of the AIPAC factor: the US Congress is in Israel's pocket. The way that may work with Israel is to convince the ISRAELI PUBLIC, not the ideological leaders, that their present direction is harmful. This is how it DID work in the past. When Jim Baker pressured PM Shamir the Ideologue, he didn't change Shamir's mind even slightly. But the Israeli public understood, kicked Shamir out of office, and replaced him by Rabin. This is how the Oslo process could start. Under the present circumstances, a UN recognition of Palestine, with the stigma of colonialism and South-Africanism, will do more to change Israelis' minds than all the speeches Obama can make in a lifetime. When Netanyahu is about to jump off the roof, don't offer last minute options, just don't stand in his way.
