Regardless of whether Obama sees Netanyahu as a Republican (I don't know if he does), Obama certainly sees American Jews as staunch Democrats. As long as the overwhelming majority of American Jews vote Democrat no matter what, Obama has nothing to fear electorally treating Israel abysmally and aligning American policy with that of the Palestinians. That's why J Street is so damaging; by apologizing for (and even encouraging) Obama's actions, they anchor Jews into the Democratic party at a time when, if we are to be effective advocates for Israel, must assert our political independence by credibly demonstrating that we will vote Republican (or Independent if such a movement arises) if Obama continues his present course. This may be one reason why Obama has personal animosity towards Netanyahu: Not because Netanyahu is a "Republican" in Israel, but because by standing up to Obama, he creates a context for American Jews to vote Republican in the US.
