Irans space program has less to do with science and more to the development of ICBMS which can hit mainland America. They might get abit of prestige from sending animals into space but they don't spend millions developing rockets just for prestige and there is no scientific knowledge to be gained. This is about missile development. Short & intermediate range missiles like the Shihab launch and just go straight to their target and can be shot down with conventional missile defines systems. ICBMS are designed to travel anywhere on the planet and they do so by leaving the atmosphere and reentering when they reach their target. To avoid burning up on renetry they need to have the heat proof nose cones like are found on space rockets. An ICBM program would invite an America military operation against missile and nuclear sites. If the cover is a space program the west still worry but not as much so and its harder to justify military action. If Iran was just wanting to wave a big stick in the Middle East short - intermediate range missiles would be fine only if they wanted to threaten countries beyond the region would an ICBM serve any purpose and its also further proof Iran is developing nukes. Since the revolution Iran has wanted America to remove its military presence in the Gulf ( Fifth Fleet & airbases ) and they want America to stop supporting Israel so logic is have a single nuke on a missile with the range to hit America and it will make Iran a global power and allow them to make demands of America. Considering that only America, Russia, India, Pakistan China and Israel have more advanced missile programs than Obama has good reason to worry about Iran and the pace of Iran's missile program should have concerned Obama in his first term when he only took half hearted measures with missile defense and didn't consider future threats.
