There are some people who can...but their names are Netanyahu and Abbas. If Israel and the Palestinians...who are directly affected by the current status quo...don't commit to compromise and resolution of this conflict...there is nothing the US can do to solve a problem that inherently not ours to begin with. I agree with the author that the US should not try to impose anything on anyone involved in this dispute...but for a much different reason. This sham we call the peace process costs the American taxpayer a lot of money...and it's getting no results. If there is a message to be gleaned from our recent election it was that the American taxpayer will measure success in terms of results rather than campaign promises...by real accomplishment rather than rhetoric. If the US doesn't see progress toward peace...the mega-dollars we currently spend in the ME would be better used at home.
