In the year 66, C.E., Jews revolted (yet again) against the Romans, who were extremely cruel oppressors of Jewish civilization and religious culture. The revolt was rationally nothing but national suicide. For years and hundreds of thousands of Jews, men, women and children massacred, Jerusalem and the Second Temple were distroyed by Titus. Then came Massada, then in 135 C.E. came the next revolt under Bar Kochba and his spiritual mentor, Rabbi Akiva. If the first was suicidal, the second one was more. Then came Betar. The destruction of Jewry and the diaspora began for two millenia. And the Romans renamed Judea capta as "Philistia" for the "Sea Peoples" who once arrived from the Greek islands by the time of the Israelite kings. This time, 2011, the Israeli leadership, elected or not, has embarked on yet another suicidal revolt, -a harmful one to the Arab inhabitants- which seeks to occupy and in the long or very long term, turn the West Bank into an integral part of israel, as if palestinians weren't there to stay. The same germ, the same suicidal virus is present two milennia later. It's a valuable reading what Rabbi David Hartmann has to say about it, on ynet.
