Israel's complete indifference to the suffering of the Palestinians, caused by Israel itelf makes one reflect on an important aspect of Israel and possibily the Jewish character. St.Paul said: "In Christ there is no Jew nor Gentile." This universalism is also shared by Islam and its notion of world community, the Umma. The absence of this dimension in Judaism indicates a narrow tribalism(particularism).Only what happens to the Jews matters,no one or nothing else.Sure, there are exceptions to this attitude, but those exceptions highlight the rule. Some Jews pride themselves on this. That is unfortunate, because the international community is moving in the opposite direction. And those who remain arrogantly intranisgent are just going to be isolated. All this, quite apart from the moral and spiritual aspects of the problem that I indicated above.
