Ari Shavit, like many Israelis take for granted that Israel will keep huge settlement blocks in the west bank as a condition to any peace. After all, it is impossible to move 200,000 people ten or twenty miles, right? This is the conclusion that Israel had in mind as they relentlessly poured settlers into the west bank during these past decades. Let me remind Ari, and others, that, about the same time that Palestine was partitioned, creating Israel, India was partitioned, creating Pakistan. There was a land swap and population transfer, just as is being considered in the case of Israel/Palestine. The India partition caused more than fourteen million people to be displaced and resettled. Many of them traveled for hundreds of miles under extremely difficult circumstances. Relocating two hundred thousand Jews a thirty minute drive under easy circumstances is not so difficult. Let Israel enjoy another building boom, but let it be inside Israel for a change.
