Historical note:They weren't regular police from Ireland, they were either Black and Tans or members of the Auxiliary Division of the Royal Irish Constabulatory both of which had , perhaps undeserved, reputation for being particularly brutal. (Regular RIC officers could be just as bad.) This may explain why the leaders of the Yishuv studied the writings of Michael Collins and organized Haganah along the lines of the IRA of the Anglo-Irish War.
