I've been an athiest for most of my life (61 years to date) and still proud of calling myself a member of the Jewish people. When people ask me how I can do that I answer simply,"We (Jews) are a "people" - that is to say a civilization - no less than the Chinese or French. Judaism is the religion of the Jewish people - but it's not the only criterion for being a member; just one aspect. perhaps it's most pronounced aspect, but not being a "believer" does not preclude one from membership. My mother was Jewish and I'm proud to be a Jew - therefore I am one. Simple, isn't it?
