Tartus is the only port in the Mediterranean the Russian navy can still use and so they can't afford to lose it. If they start sending ships to the port thats so important strategically then its a huge mistake to send ships there just to show solidarity to Assad in his war against the Syrian people. Unless he can pull off something spectacular then Assad's days are numbered and the next government won't be to happy about Russia so openly supporting Assad in their hour of need and they will ban the Russian navy using Tartus leaving the Russian navy without a port in the Medeterranean which will soil Russia's chances of getting involved in Muddle East affairs again.
